The UK housing market has been focused on BS3621 for locking of final exit doors because UK insurance companies more often than not specify this standard. In fact insurance companies often make the fitting of 'BS3621 locks' on final exit doors a condition of cover and they can refuse to pay out after a burglary if after the event they find that they weren't fitted. The publication and implementation of the European CEN standards has resulted in a new version of BS3621 being introduced. The old standard BS3621: 1998 was in conflict with the new European Standard EN 12209 and has been replaced by BS3621: 2004.
